چکیده

HE formal genetics of flour beetles of the genus Tribolium is still in its infancy. Although these organisms have found a habitat in the laboratories of the ecologist, the quantitative geneticist, and more recently, the population biologist (KING and DAWSON 1972) their use has been restricted by the availability of only a limited number of reliable mutants and further hampered by a meager knowledge of linkage relationships. At present there are 10 linkage groups corresponding to the 10 chromosomes of T. castaneum, the most widely used and genetically best known of the species in this genus. Although some of the linkage groups are represented by only a single gene, linkage group IV is one of the better marked, with some 11 loci that have been at least tentatively mapped ( SOKOLOFF 1966; SOKOLOFF, HOY and JOHNSON 1966; DAWSON 1972). One interesting feature associated with linkage group IV is a sex difference in the frequency of crossing over. SOKOLOFF (1963) reported no sex difference in a study of crossing over between two loci on this chromosome, but JOHNSON (1966) found a significant difference for the same two loci. During the course of studies with a new mutant in this linkage group, further information was collected on the sex difference in crossing over.

Close linkage of eye color genes in Tribolium castaneum.

N the course of linkage studies involving several new mutations affecting eye I pigmentation in the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, it became apparent that while being nonallelic to each other and to previously reported eye mutants they were not randomly distributed in the genome. In fact, of the nine eye mutant loci thus far reported, six occur as colsely linked members of three gene pairs....

AFLP-based genetic linkage map for the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum).

The red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) is a major pest of stored grain and grain products and a popular model species for a variety of ecological, evolutionary, and developmental biology studies. Development of a linkage map based on reproducible and highly polymorphic molecular markers would greatly facilitate research in these disciplines. We have developed a genetic linkage map using 269...

Insecticidal efficacy of diatomaceous earth against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Laboratory bioassays were carried out to evaluate the insecticidal efficacy of SilicoSec? against 7 - 14 day old adults, old and young larvae of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) with the mean ? SE (n = 30) weight of 3.4 ? 0.1 and 0.6 ? 0.1 mg, respectively at 27?C and 55 ? 5% RH. Wheat treated with four dose rates of SilicoSec? and untreated wheat served as a control with three replications. Adult?...

Cloning and characterization of the Tribolium castaneum eye-color genes encoding tryptophan oxygenase and kynurenine 3-monooxygenase.

The use of eye-color mutants and their corresponding genes as scorable marker systems has facilitated the development of transformation technology in Drosophila and other insects. In the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, the only currently available system for germline transformation employs the exogenous marker gene, EGFP, driven by an eye-specific promoter. To exploit the advantages offe...
